As part of my ongoing problem with KB908531 I tried< for the first time I
might add, System Restore. I went back about 4 days. A panel was returned
which said in essence that System Restore failed. In my haste I didn't copy
the complete message.

Does anyone know if Windows has a test for System Restore that would say
like "system restore is working"?

TIA
Dan

There is no such test included with Windows, although perhaps there
should be.

You can test System Restore yourself with the following procedure:

1. Create a new desktop shortcut (to anything).
2. Create a new manual restore point and name it Test or similar.
3. Delete the shortcut you created in step 1.
4. Reboot the computer. (not really necessary)
5. Run System Restore and choose the restore point you created in
step 2.

The deleted shortcut should reappear on you desktop.

I have found that XP's Restore may work about 25% of the time which is NOT
all that reliable LOL. That is why I use Ghost to image the HD.

My experience with System Restore has been somewhat better than yours,
but it is susceptible to failure and there is as yet no way, other
than a test procedure such as I described in my previous post, to see
if System Restore is in fact usable.
