Having problems with a new New XP Home edition. Everything has slowed down
to a crawl. Wanted to do a System Restore but no dates have been set. Was
looking at trying a Scanreg /restore but can't seem to get into a proper
command prompt mode. If this isn't available in XP, is there something
similar that I can try before wiping everything off and starting from
scratch?

Dan,

Assuming you haven't gone online without the Windows (or other) Firewall
running, you probably want to do the advised configuration process, ie
disabling certain services, turning other settings off in My
Computer/Properties.

For instance (as the late Alex Nichol used to recommend) you should open My
Computer/Properties/Advanced/Performance/Settings and uncheck the first ten
items. There is so much to turn off, though, or maybe set Services not to
Disabled but Manual rather than Automatic, though with much of this it's
mostly a problem if you have relatively low installed RAM (ie, 256MB is
low). On the installed RAM subject, having Diskeeper, set on 'Set it and
forget it' will impact performance when running - especially in a new
installation.

Have fun looking through Kelly's Korner and Doug Knox's site. Personally I
think Kelly is crown princess of XP.

XP doesn't have Scanreg (or equivalent MS tool). Get Lars Hederer's Erunt
(inc. NTregopt), but it won't help you after the fact as you have no
registry backups with neither it or System Restore running.

Without knowing more about your setup it's hard to advise further.

Hi,

System Restore replaced Scanreg in XP.

There are several reasons System Restore has no restore points. Let's
take a look at Event Viewer for any System Restore logs that may have
been created recently that may help us diagnosing the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title “Source” at the top of the source name column in
the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the
two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event
information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two
event here. There’s no need to post duplicate Event ID’s.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

Thanks for the feedback Gentlemen.
Shane (Are you the same one that hangs out in Win Me?), I'll gladly go
through each item in the list you provided and implement any/all deemed
appropriate. However before doing so, I would like to get this beast back to
where it was when I took it out of the box last week. Most of the things I
tinkered with related to getting it going on my little home network. Took me
5 days for something that should have taken no more than 30 minutes, tops. I
installed and reinstalled a "network" using the Wizard at least 20 times but
always to no avail. Finally figured out that I had two basic problems, one
of which was that even though I had disengaged the Norton Firewall, it still
interfered with the setup of the network. The other item was enabling
NetBIOS over TCP/IP. In between, there were numerous adjustments made to a
whole bunch of settings! Given I don't remember most of those that I played
with, I would like to get back to a point that I know was good. Then I'll
tweak !

Bert, there were several failures and warnings in Event Viewer. There were
two SRService items , neither of which indicated a problem. I have pasted as
requested the SR the oldest (latest says the same but was dated Dec 26).
Don't have a simple "sr" name but did have "srv" and have copied below.

Event Type: Information
Event Source: SRService
Event Category: None

Description:
While transmitting or receiving data, the server encountered a network

a possible error in your network configuration. The error status code is
contained within the returned data (formatted as Words) and may point you
towards the problem.

I'll go through all the others and see if there are any that I can resolve
and if I can get the system back to its previous level then I'll make sure
that I read up on ensuring that SR works. In meantime, it's looking like I'm
going to wipe everything off this and reinstall from scratch. I'm just in
the process of reading up on planning partitions so that I can do all at
once.

Thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated.

Dan, Try this:
System file checker
Windows Xp
Start > Run, then type sfc /scannow and click OK. You will need the Windows
CD unless you copied the I386 folder to C:\ drive during installation. If you
didn't install the I386 folder you can copy it to C:\ drive from the CD then
Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion|Setup

Now on the right hand side double click SourcePath and Replace D:| with C:\

Now if you run sfc /scannow you should not be asked to insert your Windows
XP CD.

Try sfc /scannow again!

Also the computer may just need cleaning up. Check out my website at the
bottom
of the page called "Tips on cleaning up your Computer" for that.

Thanks Marv. I had in fact run SFC on the weekend. I have taken note of your
website and will review your recommendations.

Thanks again

How much RAM does your new system have? Many new boxes, especially
those sold through big box retailers, have minimal amounts of RAM
installed and most often need additional RAM in order to achieve
reasonable performance.

Is the computer infested with any Norton/Symantec products? These
have a well-earned reputation for having the "who dropped the anchor?"
effect on computer performance.

Hi Ron
It's an HP Pavilion a1222n, AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 GHz Processor with 1
GB DDR SDRAM and a 250 GB SATA hard drive. I was more than happy with it out
of the box but I screwed it up trying to get it recognized on my little home
network. Turned out the culprit was Norton even though I had de-activated
its Firewall.

Since I can't restore it via SR and Scanreg /restore isn't an option, I
think I may very well wipe it clean and reinstall. This will allow me to
keep the bloatware off the system and just as importantly I will be able to
set up some partitions for this humongous hard drive.

Fair enough. Obviously this group is a good place to get assistance with XP.
I just wanted to make sure you check out Kelly's:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm and Doug's: http://dougknox.com/ as,
if you haven't I feel sure you'll be glad you did. But as I haven't
experienced the problems you describe I can't, personally, be any more help
than that.

Good luck.

Thanks for coming back, Shane. I think Joan had confirmed that indeed you
were the one and only!

I have those two sites on my radar. Actually this beast is now running OK
again, however as indicated in another thread, I'm going to dump everything
and start all over. Should be fun.

All the best in 2006

Yeah, been awhile since I was here and in desperation went back to marking
posts older than a couple of days as read. So didn't see Joan's reply at
first!

Good. Glad to hear.

Yeah. Best way to learn a new OS, I reckon!

You too, Dan. Happy New Year.
