System Restore

I've experienced a number of problems on my computer (NAV not loading
correctly, other programs missing files, etc.). Therefore, I decided to
restore my system to the previous restore point (which was Sunday,
thankfully). However, I cannot access the System Restore dialog. When I
click on Control Panel>Performance & Maintenance>System Restore (in the
upper left column), nothing happens. I've also tried to access system
restore through the "Help & Support" function on the start menu, but nothing
happens then either. I've run Ad-Aware and Spybot on my computer (have been
installed for about a year, not after I realized I had a problem), but I
don't receive any indications that I've got a problem. Most other programs
seem to be operating as they should. What should I do?

Uninstall NAV.

See if you can then run Anti Virus and Anti SPyware again and delete any
crud.

If the system still misbehaves, then perform a repair installation of XP.

After that, attempt to reinstall NAV.

If you have NAV 2003, you may need to download rnav2003.exe from, Symantec
in order to correctly uninstall the NAV.

I'm afraid my only recommendation is to completly remove NAV, incuding all
entries in the Registry & replace it with another AV.
There are quite a few fans out there for NAV, but if you search back in the
NG, you'll find so many problems that offhandedly comment on "I have NAV
installed".
I just have a gut feeling that that program has gone over the top & is
causing a hell of a lot of software problems. I may be wrong, but my psyche
is working positively overtime on that one.

I agree. NAV roots itself much to deeply into the OS in places where
it doesn't belong. It's uninstall routine is written so poorly it cant
remove all the junk that was added during the install. They
acknowledged the problem by creating an uninstall utility that has to
be downloaded from there web site. Even at that I would recommend
searching the registry for leftovers. Rather than running seamlessly
in the background as most anti virus programs do, it interferes with
other programs and creates performance problems. The best advise it to
avoid this product.
