system restore won't work

When I run system restore, everything seems to go smoothly with no error
messages. However, the final system restore screen (after it reboots) says
it cannot resotre the system to the restore point I chose. I have tried a
several different restore points spanning several weeks, but nothing seems to
work. Any suggestions for this novice?

Hi

That error message would suggest that one or more of the System Restore
files have become corrupt. You can try turning SR off/on, although you will
lose all existing checkpoints:

Right click on My Computer and select Properties>System Restore. Enable
'Turn off System Restore on all drives' - then reboot your PC. Go back into
SR and disable 'Turn off...' and then reboot again. After the second reboot
you should have one new checkpoint and SR should work properly after that.

Will Denny has given you the only practical solution to your problem.
There is no known way of repairing a damaged System Restore so that
the existing restore points, or at least some of them, can be made
usable.

As a general rule System Restore should not be used to go back more
than a week or perhaps 10 days at the most. Going back further than
this usually results in more problems than it ever resolves. You
should consider reducing the amount of disk space used by System
Restore to something in the 800 mb range for most drives. That will
give an adequate range of System Restore points for almost every
situation unless you are installing and uninstalling several major
application programs every day.

Restore pages: http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html

Good luck

Have you had any luck? I have the same problem. I have tried clearing all
previous points and creating a new point. Still, where I try to restore to
this new point I get that same message. I don't want to reinstall XP just
yet but I do want to fix SR.

Hi

Try reinstalling System Restore:

Open Windows Explorer and go to the windows\inf folder. In the right hand
pane find the sr.inf file, right click on it and select Install.

Hi,
New here. I had a problem with my computer, when I went to do the system
restore, I found the date in the system was March 2017. I want to restore to
3/13/06. Any ideas

If the date you want is not present, then you can not restore to it.

I would suggest disabling System Restore to purge all existing restore
points.
Correct the time and date of the system.
Enable System Restore and start fresh.
