System restore wont even load up

Let me run through my problem thoroughly, because there hasn't been an answer
that has worked yet. When I go to Accessories and System Restore, a window
comes up saying: "Choose the program you want to use to open this file:
rstrui.exe". Then i click browse and find the file.

Then after that it says: "System restore has been turned off. Do you want
to turn on System Restore now?" Then I click "Yes".

Then after that it says: "Choose the program you want to use to open file:
rundll32.exe". This is where I am stuck and I dont know where the file is to
open rundll32.exe, I have browsed the file and found rundll32.exe, but it
isn't the file to open it. And the window closes within a few seconds as
well, so I am having to find the file really quick.

I feel that it is a virus I may have downloaded and it must of somehow got
past my virus protector. I have a very expensive program on there which I
have lost the CD to and I cannot risk losing it, by buying another hard
drive. Can somebody please help me? There seems to be no way around it,
because people's problems dont seem to match mine. I have got all of my
important files backed-up on a few DVD's and stuff, so I dont mind how far
back i get restored to, but I just need desperate help.

Hopefully that should be explained more than enough so people can't post
replies that don't work, or have no relation to my problem.

yeh, it could be
a virus sending you
into a loop.

you could try
the system restore via
safemode.

but there may be a possibility
that if you do have malware
loaded, it may have stored
in your restore points as well.

but you have nothing to
loose by trying.

if you are still unsuccessful,
then you might want to run
this:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm

in addition and if you
have windows setup cd
you can also run a system
file check by going to
start then run the following:

sfc /scannow

and if all else fails
or you simply have the
time and patience, you
can do a "repair installation"

keep us apprised.
