System Restore will not work!

Hi there , this is my first time using one of these groups and I hope someone
can help.

I have Windows XP with SP2 installed, an up to date anti-virus which shows
my PC as clean, firewall and Microsoft Anti-spyware.
For some reason System restore has stopped working. I have checked the Event
viewer and the only 'sr' error I can find gave this message:-
The System Restore filter encountered the unexpected error '0xC000009A'
while processing the file '00038568.LNK' on the volume 'HarddiskVolume1'. It
has stopped monitoring the volume. It showed EventID 1.
Hope this makes sense and someone can advise a possible solution
Many tks in advance

Hi,

Go to Start - Search - All files and folders and do a search for:

00038568.LNK

Make sure to expand "More advanced option" and put a check next to the
first three options before doing the search.
Search the removable drive also.

Make note of the location (path) of the file and post it here.

Hi Bert
Many thanks for your reply.
I am really confused by this but I followed your suggestions, expanded the
advanced
options etc.. but the only files with 00038568.LNK in them where the Temp
Int Files
from my earlier searches on the internet looking for solutions.
Not sure what has happened?
Regards

Right click on the IE icon and select Properties. Under Temporary Internet Files click
Delete Files... then Ok. Repeat and check Delete all offline content then Ok again.

Confirm that the file is gone.

Test System Restore by creating a new restore point named TEST.
Create a new folder in the desktop an name it TEST.
Now restore to the Test restore point.

Hi Bert
Followed your suggestions and System Restore now working if I create a current
restore point but will not go back to any earlier dates. I think I have
probably lost
any of these earlier points unless you can think of anything else that may
solve the
problem.
Many thanks again for your help.

That would indicates that the earlier restore points are corrupt and will need to be
deleted. Once a restore point becomes corrupt all previous restore points will be
unusable. Using Disk Clean-up with the System Option will remove all but the most recent
restore point.

Hi Bert
Sorry for delay in replying , but have followed your suggestions and system
restore
now working and have cleared previous restore points so hopefully can start
afresh.
Many thanks for your advice and time to all who replied, it is much
appreciated.
