System restore will not start/run

Up until today I have had no problems with using my system restore. In fact
it has come in handy for me. Now in the last 3 days I noticed it was not
doing any System restore creations daily as it had been. So I did one
manually. Then I noticed it did not do any on its own the next day. So I
turned it off and it cleared all the past 2+ months worth that were there. I
had it set at 12%.

Now today I looked and it will not let me in. I get a popup message saying
"System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart computer
and then run System Restore again." So I hit the OK button and
restarted/booted the computer and the same message comes up. I tried the
system properties window and it will not allow me to turn it off there. I get
the message “Could not start System Restore Service service on local
computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified"

So I went to Local Services and see System Restore is not STARTED. I clicked
on Start but it will not start.

So I am at a lose. Oh yes I even tried running it in safe mode but that did
not work either and with my Zone Alarm Internet Security 7.0 turned off. I
have not made any changes to my computer lately but this just seems to have
gotten corrupt. Where do I look and how do I fix it?

I have WINXP home sp 2. IE 6.0 and Firefox 2.0.0.1 But this has all been
normal and running fine for a long time until this showed up just 3 days ago.

Sorry this is so long but I am trying to give you everything I know and
tried at this point.

Look at the troubleshooting steps on Bert Kinney's System Restore page.

No that does not help. I cannot open System Restore at all becasue it is not
running in my Services and Services will not let me START it.

I also tried entering that line in the RUN box in SAFE MODE but that did not
do anything either. It still will not run.

I am wondering if some part of my OS is corrupt. And if so is there a way of
"reparing it" without reloading the OS(Win XP) from scratch.

Look again at the site that Rock directed you to
(http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html).

At the top of the screen, *above* the label "How to use System Restore
in Windows XP" there are 4 drop down menus. Click on the left side
one (System Restore in WinXP) and choose the "Error Messages" page.

Good luck

Thanks. I did not see all those options there at the top of that page. But
to my dismay the pop up message that I keeping getting is not listed there.
The fact is it seems like something is missing to allow me to START the
System Resore system. I have looked for someplace to troubleshoot this but
cannot find anything. Or someplace to see if the proper file(s) are there in
a folder that is necessary for this to open and run.

Well, I continue to try everything that has been suggested and other things
I have found in searches here in the newsgroups or elsewhere on
line....BUT....none of them address specifically my situation.

I still get 3 Messages popping up depending on where I try to activate the
System Restore service....

"System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart
computer
and then run System Restore again."

“Could not start System Restore Service service on local computer. Error 2:
The system cannot find the file specified"

"System Restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more
drives. Please restart your machine"

The issue is I cannot start the RS service.

Something is apparently corrupt and I do not know how to reinstall this part
of Win XP short of doing a total clean and reload the OS. Some of the links
that I found told of some fixes but when I try this they do not always match
exactly my situation nor do I have what they say I should find when I get to
a location to make a change in the registry, etc.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
