System Restore - renames files ?

Hi there,
I ran System Restore recently (to recover from a Norton internet Security
2005 problem) and System Restore reported that the restore was successful but
"some files were renamed to preserve the files."

The files were a couple of Symantec NIS files

Can anyone tell me why System Restore would detect problems with files
causing it to rename them?

What should I do with the renamed files (as far as I can see the renamed
file and the original are the same (exactly the same file size)

Hi Simon,

This is a rare occurrence which I have not seen any documentation on.
But not surprising considering Norton is involved. The best way recover
from a bad install is to uninstall the offending application via
add/remove programs in control panel. With Norton's poor uninstall
process, a separate utility is needed to remove all it's junk. I would
suggest backing up the renamed file for a couple of week in case there
are needed later.

Hi Bert,
thanks for the info.

The problem arose after a Norton "Live Update", so I cannot uninstall it,
hence using System Restore.

I have now sorted out the Norton problem (by deleting its "Program Rules"
and recreating them) but I am still curious about the renamed files, here's
some examples (from the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec
Shared\CCPD-LC)
symlcrst(2)(2).dll
symlcrst(2)(3).dll
symlcrst(2)(6).dll
symlcrst(2)(7).dll
symlcrst.dll
