Whenever I try to open System Restore an error message pops up that says
"C\:WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe is not a valid Win32 application."
What does this mean and is there any way to fix it? Please!? I need to
restore my computer to a previous state for it to work properly again. Thanks
a bunch.

have you tried booting it in safe mode? If that does not work you may need to
run system restore

THE REPAIR CONSOLE

This method will reinstall Windows XP, and delete all drivers and windows
updates, BUT IT WILL NOT DELETE YOUR PROGRAMS OR FILES!

To use it you need to insert your Windows XP CD, and then restart your
computer. Then when the boot screen comes up, click ‘boot from cd’ and once
the XP cd has loaded, select the repair console.

Here are some websites that describe the process
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058/EN-US/ Please not this is very detailed
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm this is quite a good
step by step guide which I recommend printing off and looking at while doing
your first repair

Do not worry. Repairs are very easy, but afterwards you will need to
reinstall drivers, and run Windows Update.

SAFE MODE

Hope that helps

Cheers

The OP is having problems running System Restore. So it will be
impossible for him to follow this advice.
THE REPAIR CONSOLE

(snip drivel)

Stop posting this inaccurate information. Quite a few people have told
you this. First of all, you are posting it as an answer to questions to
which any kind of repair install is irrelevant. Second of all, you are
giving inaccurate and wrong information.

You either mean well or you are related to (or actually are) Andrew E.,
who posts dangerous and harmful garbage. If you are not malicious and
you mean well, then try lurking in the newsgroup for a lot longer and
learning more about WindowsXP before posting answers. Someone might
follow your inaccurate advice and there will be real and sad
consequences for them.

This is a "Self-Regulating" NG. Inaccurate or grossly inappropriate
advice will usually be quickly rebuked. Whatever your intentions, it's
best to learn how it works and participate when you have 1st hand
knowledge to pass on or a pertinent URL that applies. There's room
for everybody, but certain behaviors are expected.

It's my opinion he's a troll. Notice he's posting using the CDO web
interface and never comes back to follow up on his replies. Also,
last week his signature consisted of "mvp wannabe" or some such. If
he's not a troll and playing dumb purposely, then he needs to set
back like you say and learn before replying.

Regards.

You're probably right. Maybe he's Andrew E. in disguise. I usually
ignore people like him (and Andrew E.) but the problem is that some
poor poster might follow Quintin/AndrewE.'s bad instructions and hose
their system. As you know, a lot of people who post here really don't
know anything about newsgroups, think they're talking to Microsoft, and
believe anything in writing. So that's why I (and I assume some of the
other regulars) are trying to follow his posts with at least a warning
to the OP. Sort of like watching a horror movie, "DON'T open that door!
Turn on the lights!"
