Each time I try to use system restore it returns a message that the restore
was unsuccessful. This started happening after a recent security suite
install. I installed ZoneAlarm 2007 (ZA) and have had the problem since. I
have since tried System mechanic 6 and RegScubXP to fix the problem. I do not
want to make things worse. Any suggestions on how to fix my problems. I have
uninstalled ZA, but am nevious without secuirty protection. Pleae help.

Hi,

See if System Restore will function in Safe Mode.

How to starting Windows XP in Safe Mode:

If there are any Norton applications installed, take a look at this page.

Here are some more troubleshooting steps to take when System Restore fails
to restore:

The Event Viewer can sometimes be helpful in tracking down errors.

Zonealarm seems to have a lot of unwanted baggage these days. There seems
to be a lot of problems that start happening as soon as Zonealarm is
installed, but don't go away when it is uninstalled again. Some of those
problems have been aired on this and other newsgroups. The only way round
it that I know of is to load back a backup of your system from before the
installation of Zonealarm. Your problem is one of the ones I have heard of
before.

You do have a backup of your system don't you?

Try turning off Zone Alarm whilst using System Restore and then turning
it back on when done. I suspect you will find it is the same point Bert
makes regarding Norton.

Hi Gerry
I have uninstalled ZA. Try system restore in Safe mode. same message.
Cheers Mike

After posting I read some more about the problems created by Zone Alarm.
Removing does not necessarily resolve your difficulties with System
Restore. It is only part of the solution. Bert Kinney know far more
about this topic than I. He will most likely post again.

I suspect you need to reinstall System Restore:

That is waht I was trying to do isn't that what system restore is for?

No. System restore just restores an earlier registry and a few other
important files and pointers. This will usually repair 99% of problems.
Your backup is the copy of your hard disk that you carefully and regularly
make in case 1) your hard disk fails and you can easily copy the backup back
or 2) something you install totally screws your windows such that it cannot
be recovered any other way.

Thanks for the help. I was able to reinstall sr.inf many thanks to you. Now
I just have to figure out how to reinstall ZA. ZA have suggested another
firewall or remnants of the previous install firewall is preventing another
install. ZA is sending me PCCTool that should be used to remove my previous
install. Go figure.
I now know that I should should have a back up of my system I that that was
what restore was for. Can you suggest the best method for doing this. Using
Nero has been suggested. As the Microsoft back-up isn't quite up to snuff.
Thanks again.

Hi Mike,

You're welcome.

As far as firewalls go, for DSL/Cable users with a router, the Windows SP2
firewall is sufficient.

I haven't use Nero as a backup tool, but it's worth a try. I would not
suggest MS backup.

Using imaging software is another option for full partition backup.

I just wanted to thank Bert for his helpful information. I came here
searching for an answer to my problem (details on it below) and re-installing
System Restore seems to have worked for me just fine. Bert, I appreciate your
thoughtful responses and your very helpful Web page (complete with screen
captures).

Here is the problem I was facing so others who have the same situation might
benefit from Bert's reply:

After replacing my C:\ drive recently I noticed System Restore stopped
working. When I launched System Restore, it crashed with the error message:
"System REstore has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
forthe invonvenience."

When I looked at My Computer>System Properties and clicked on the System
Restore tab, I got an error message:
"Run a DLL as an App" "Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem..."
It didn't happen on any other tab--just the System Restore tab.

Shortly after I closed that window, I got another error message:
Dr.Watson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close..."

Re-installing System Restore per Bert's suggestion seems to have worked.
Thanks again, Bert.
