system restore not restoring

My system restore is not working. I have over 110Gb of hard disk space, and only 7Gbin use. task scheduler and system restore are both activated. the system restore wizard will not let me use (or even show) any restore point earlier than 1 Jan 2004. The points showing are all "checlkist" points but when I try to use them the system reboots and say the restore failed - "no changes were made to your computer" - but I don't know why
I have anti-virus and firewall software running.

can anyone help, please?

Helen;
There may be corrupted data in system Restore.
Turn off/on System Restore to delete corrupted files:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Click System Restore Settings on left side.
Check "Turn off System Restore", click OK, follow prompts and reboot.
This deletes ALL Restore Points including corruption.
Then go back and turn on system Restore and create a Restore Point.
