OK, so I have no other choices except MAC or Linux. Thise severely limit my
choices of programs so I'm stuck with Windows.

So Why doesn't my system restore work in XP??? After attempting a system
restore, I get the message; Restoration was unsuccessful No changes have
been made to your computer. System Restore was unable to restore your
computer to the specified restore point. Select another restore point and
try to perform the restoration again."

According to the article at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/getstarted/ballew_03
may19.mspx

1. I DO have WAY more than 200 MB of free space available on the computer

2. I DID choose an earlier restore point and try again

3. I AM logged in as an administrator

4. And System Restore Service IS running AND set to AUTOMATIC

So what is the problem?? Can someone please help explain why there are so
many quirky bugs like this in Windows??

Here's a link to System Restore information by one of the MVP's:

As you can see, it's a very complicated piece of software. My biggest
surprise is that it works at all!

Frankly, I use a hard disk imaging utility for my system. It makes an exact
copy of my hard drive on the day that I make the image. Later on it's simple
to restore my PC to it's former operating state. The drawback is that it
takes lot's more room than System Restore does.

Because Windoze is a half-baked toy operating system. Users have just become
used to things not working as they should and expect no more from their
computers. It's just part of the Windoze eXPerience, unfortunately.

Buy a cheap used computer and install Linux on it, start playing around with
it and gradually switch over. Or just dual boot.

Hi James,

Hi,

There are several reasons this may occur. Let's take a look at Event Viewer for any System
Restore logs that may have been created recently that may help us diagnosing the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title “Source” at the top of the source name column in the right pane to
sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the two arrows in the
upper right corner. This will copy the event information to the clipboard. Paste the
information for each of the two event here.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

If you require a reliable 'backup' of the system registry I suggest
you download (freeware) and use ERUNT (google for site). System
Restore is simply unreliable.

Dual booting can be dangerous. I found just having Linux on my
system, Windows got a lot more BSODs than usual. And when I tried to
boot from a Windows CD, the Windows CD wrote garbage to some Windows
system files because apparently Microsoft think "their" machines
should not have any other OS on them.
