looking to see if someone can point me in the right direction

i have a laptop that will not complete a system restore. after the system
restarts it says that the restore was unsuccessful. there is nothing
written to the event logs for the error. i have turned off system restore
which deleted all restore points and then re-enabled it. i was able to do
one successful restore as a test and then after that i have not been able
to.

thanks

Dear Bryan,

Thanks for posting here.

My name is Helen and I am happy to be working with you on this issue. From
the problem description of the post you submitted, my understanding is: You
use System Restore to recover the system and after the system restarts, the
restore was unsuccessful is received.

Based on my research and experiences, we can take the following steps to
troubleshoot this issue:

Step 1: Run chkdsk /r in Recovery Console
==================
1. Restart the computer.
2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the
Recovery Console.
3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, choose the
installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console.
4. When you are prompted to do so, type the administrator password. If the
administrator password is blank, press ENTER.
5. At the command prompt, type chkdsk /r , and then press ENTER.
6. When Chkdsk has finished running, read the results, and then take any
necessary steps to complete the process. For example, you may be prompted
to run chkdsk /f to fix certain problems.
7. Restart the computer, and then try to run repair again.

Step 2: Run Defragment
===================
1. Open My Computer.
2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then
click Properties.
3. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
4. Click Defragment.

Step 3: Allocate more spaces for system restore
===================
System Restore requires at least 200 MB of available space on the hard disk
(or the partition that contains your operating system folder). For best
performance and protection, you should allocate more space.

By default, when the operating system installs System Restore on your
computer, it allocates approximately 12 percent of the available disk space
to System Restore to archive restore points.

1. Click Start and right click My Computer to select Properties.
2. Under the System Restore tab, select a drive from the Available drives
box by clicking it, and then click Settings. If you have only one drive or
partition, it is selected for you.
3. In the Drive <drive:>settings box, move the Disk space to use slider to
change the disk space allocation for System Restore. Note that you cannot
exceed 12 percent of the available disk space.

In order to supplement your description, please confirm the following
information:

1. Could you please send a screenshot of the restore failure to me at
(e-mail address removed)?
2. When did this issue begin to happen?

If you have any concerns on the above, please feel free to post back and I
am happy to answer any of your questions.

Regards,

Helen Li

One possibilty is that your anti-virus programme is not allowing
registry
changes. If this is so you need to turn it off whilst you use system
restore.
