No matter how far back of how recent I try to go back to a restore point, I
always get the message 'Your computer cannot be restored to [named restore
point]'.
I tried srdiag.exe, which creates several files, but I don't know where/how
to look to analyze what is happening. From what I see all restore points are
marked as valid, but I cannot trace what is going wrong. All services needed
to create restore points are working fine and the system is creating restore
points itself at a daily interval. Any help most welcome!

Hi

One or more of the System Restore files could have been corrupted - try turning SR off/on - but I'm afraid that you will lose any existing checkpoints:

Right click My Computer, select Properties and then the System Restore tab. Enable 'Turn off System Restore on all drives' and reboot your PC. After that 1st reboot go back into SR and disable 'Turn off System Restore on all drives' and reboot your PC again. After that 2nd reboot you should have one new SR checkpoint.

Hi Will, thank you, yes, tried that one, no luck, tried reinstalling sr.inf,
no luck...

Hi

Have you tried running System Restore from Safe Mode? If so, did it work?

Hi,

Once you have SR turned off, set your folder options so that you can see the
System Volume Information folders (there will be one on each drive that was
being monitored) and delete them, then reboot and restart the SR service.

Hi Rick/Will,
Thanks for your help. Now this was an odd one. I had to go in Safe Mode and
do an erase from the command prompt for all sys volume info dirs on all
drives, otherwise they were not accessible (access denied) , even though
they contained 0 bytes and the system restore service was disabled (My
Computer/properties/system restore/disable systemrestore). So in fact, not
only the contents, but the directories themselves should be deleted, to get
the thing properly working, thanks, both of you put me on the right track to
solve this.
By the way Rick, manually disabling the system restore service the way you
wrote in your message Sat, 31 Jul 2004 05:10:08 -0400, might not work if
system restore is enabled in 'My Computer/properties/system restore/'. On
reboot the service is started automatic. This just for another desperate
person reading this....
Thanks for your kind help.

Hi,

No problem. And when you disable it in services.msc, you also need to change
the startup type to prevent its restarting automatically.

Hi Salto,

Thank you for posting!

As far as I know, there are some third party programs can break System
Restore. For example, WinFax. I wonder if you have installed WinFax before?
If so, please remove the Winfax from Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs.
Restart the computer and check the issue.

By the way, System Volume Information can only be accessed by System. If
you use Windows XP Professiona, you may disable Simple File Sharing in
Folder Option and then you will see the Security tab in the Properties of
this folder. You can grant yourself the permission to access this folder if
you want.

I hope that the above information is helpful.

Have a nice day!

Do you suppose this includes Norton Systemworks 2004? I am in the midst of
this problem with System Restore not completing. I am reluctant to turn SR
off because I want to restore to a point before I installed SP2. I was not
aware of a problem until after I install Norton and now, I can't get back
where I was before I installed it. Maybe, Norton took control of the
recovery files and won't let go?
