Boot from the XP CD. It will offer to install a new or repair. Select install new.
Don't worry, it will search and find you current installation an offer to repair it.
Let it do this second repair. The second repair will reinstall the OS back to the
gold version on your CD, but will keep most if not all of your application programs
settings a data files intact. You will have to reapply all of the security patches
and SP1.

Thanks but a bit scary!

I believe I know how to, Not sure, So can you walk me/us
through the boot from CD and exactly what other events
that will happen as the boot process occurs...

thanks for the help, I installed fixit5 utilities and it
destroyed my XP Os and system restore and network
connection...Before, several days, I also just installed a
second, storage 160gig HD That all worked great...But then
I installed Fixit5 and perfect went to hell!

Please give the detailed CD boot instructions...Thanks..

Dell tech support was trying to help with F12, IDE-CD-
ROM,press 1, press R,....Looked like it was going to wipe
out my data ...Doc's and other data...
Good news? I do have a early date (Good) backup made from
my XP Back up C:\ I backed up the whole C drive, took one
hour, but I can restore..??

Not sure of possible Restore results, and I also have a 6
disk DOS boot restore set...but XP Pro OS now boots and
most things work except for :System restore, network,
internet, few other things...its a mess...

Thanks again for your assistance!

I think I will go to my backup...So I have a few concerns..

I have a full backup of the entire C:\ at a time I can
accept, though I did install several programs after
this ..and so, all I need to do is what?

Restore the whole C:\
Or just windows and will that keep my newer programs ??

Or windows and ...doc's and???

or just windows and/or system state?
What is system state?

OR?????

Thanks again...
