On my home PC I was almost out of hard drive space. To
remedy the situation I bought a Maxtor HD with 4 times
the capacity. Using their software utility, Maxblast for
Windows, I copied my entire drive onto the new maxtor
drive, which now was made the new boot drive.

The copy work well. The only glitches that I have seen
are as follows: Offoce XP looks to its installer when
Excel or Word are launched (a minor inconvenience, as the
message can be canceled). More of concern is the fact
that Syatem Restore is not working. Instead I get the
message "System Restore Application has encountered a
problem and needs to close."

Do I need to repair the operating system via the install
CD to get system restore to function again? Thanks!

To avoid that particular inconvenience with Office XP
you could have installed all its features during its
install, most people just let the DEFAULT features to be
installed and let Office to require the installation path
(or disk) to run some particular features.
Next time you install Office XP read very carefully
EVERYTHING, you will see that you'll have the option to
install from every Office application all their features
instead of running the: Install on First Run thing.
One feature I advice to skip is: Office Tools Speech
recognition feature, it just wastes resorces, that is, if
you do not have a condition like Stephen Hawkins for
example.

About your System Restore not working you were not very
specific but I will share some experience I have with my
System restore utility not working on any of my systems,
the reason?
ZoneAlarm, yes my firewall had disabled that windows
feature plus I observed that while having ZoneAlarm my
systems would not run the scandisk after a bad shutdown.

Many, many people uses ZoneAlarm I was one of them but I
found a perfect alternative to ZoneAlarm is: Outpost
Firewall (by Agnitum.com) is very very efficient and I
haven't observed any rogue behavior by it, it has a
pretty GUI too!
I hope this assist you.

This may be a result of corruption of the stored restore points - as
they will be of no use, first thing to do is clear them out. System -
System Restore, check 'Disable' and OK then reboot. Now have Folder
Options - View set to show Hidden files, and *not* Hide Protected mode
ones, go to the System Volume Information folder on each drive and
delete all the content. Start SR up again. While about it I would take
settings for each drive and limit the space allowed to something under
1GB, or in the case of a purely data partition turn it off

If it is then not working there has been damage to its software:

First step is to do a check on all system files - have the CD in the
drive ready, then Start - Run and run

SFC /Scannow

Next would be to do a re-install of just the System restore component -
go to windows\inf\sr.inf and right click it,, take Install
