System Restore and 'System Checkpoint'

I have WIndows XP and system restore is not automatically creating a 'SYSTEM
CHECKPOINT' as it apparently is supposed to do and as my Windows ME does.
Does anyone know why? Is there something I must do to have XP do this
automatically without me having to do it manually?

In case the function is not turned on, below is some advice from Help and
Support. By the way, the points are called Restore Points in XP, and they
are created at regular intervals over a 90 day period.
To turn on System Restore

1.. Open System Properties.
2.. Ensure that the Turn off System Restore check box is cleared.
Note

a.. To open System Properties, click Start, click Control Panel, and then
double-click System. In the System Properties dialog box, click the System
Restore tab.

Hi. Oh, no. I can manually create restore points as I always do when I am
tinkering around with something or installing a program, but I still would
like to have XP create a checkpoint automatically as did ME without me
manually having to do so. I have a book on XP that has a picture showing a
'System Checkpoint' and stating in the caption that "System Checkpoint, which
is one that Windows XP created automatically (a "just in case" retore
point)...

If XP can't do this, then Microsoft has removed a very useful feature from
System Restore.

System Restore should be automatically creating at least one system
restore checkpoint per day.

I assume from your posting that you have looked at the available
restore points in System Restore and the only ones that are present
are the one you have created manually.

See MVP Bert Kinney's System Restore pages:

Good luck

Hi, Ron,

Yep, everything has always worked fine with Restore except the automatic
checkpoints not being generated. I have XP with SP 2 installed. Bert
responded to me, also, so I viewed his web site and looked into a couple of
the suggestions listed there, but all checked out fine. I am wondering if it
has something to do with automatic restore points only being generated when
the system is idle.

The other thing I forgot to mention in my post is that I cannot go back to a
previous month, it appears, either. I tried to go back to February right
before I posted and could not do it. I do create a lot of manual restore
points, as a rule, so i was thinking that maybe I couldn't go back because I
had used up all the disk space alloted to restore. However, that would be
really coincidental that that would translate back to the first of March
exactly. I suspect there is a problem here, also.

If the system is really busy then yes, it probably won't create a
system restore point. However I have "Folding at Home" installed on
my machine, which keeps the CPU usage always at 100%, but it still
manages to create a daily automatic system restore point.

Bert is much more knowledgeable about System Restore than I am, and if
he is unable to pinpoint the cause then there is not much more than I
can do in this regard either.

Good luck

Hi Gman,

On the following page use the first two scripts to determine the
frequency in hours (default is 24 hours) the SR will automatically
create a restore point, and the number of days (default is 90 days) SR
maintains the restore points.

System Restore Scripts
http://home.earthlink.net/~mvp_bert/html/srscripts.html

Also use these instructions to determine how much disk space is
available for SR.
How to Adjust the amount of disk space System Restore uses
http://home.earthlink.net/~mvp_bert/html/diskspace.html

Report back with your findings.
