System Restore Always Fails

Wayne Wengert

I am having a problem with my CD ROM drives so I thought I'd try using
System Restore to go back a couple of days when things were working. Every
restore I tried ended up saying that it could not be restored to that point?
It looks as if I have restore points for each day but none of them can
really restore? How do I fix that?

Turn system restore off to purge all restore points and then turn it back on
and it will create a new restore point. Defrag after this operation.

For the CD-ROM drives problem, post back with details and someone will
assist you.

See Bert Kinney's web site on System Restore.

For the CD drive issue, is it that they have disappeared from My Computer
and/or Device Manager? If so this file, cdgone.zip, often times helps.

Thanks for the response. I'll try that but I am disappointed that the
automatic restore points are unusable.

The CD drives show error 39 in device manager. I'll pursue the links you
suggested - Thanks.

I have lots of free space on the HDD?

If your hard drive is short on available free space, then that may explain
it.

The reason I decided to write that, was mainly because "Wayne Wengert"

If an antivirus or antispyware program has removed items from the system
restore (i.e. Systme Volume Information folder) then the System Restore may
be corrupted.

I have seen badly infested (malware) systems fail system restore;
apparently some of them are now aware of the SR feature and deliberately
short-circuit it to prevent themselves from being removed in that manner.

Your best bet for making it work are to boot into safe-mode, go right to
the system restore option (not to desktop), select a SR point, and then
upon reboot GO BACK INTO SAFE MODE (to the desktop this time) to let the
restore finish (rather than going back into windows normally to let it
finish). With luck the second safe mode "trick" keeps the baddie from
intercepting the restore.

If that works, by all means run a scan while still in safe mode to rid the
machine of bad startups before rebooting into normal mode.

Hi,

Try running System Restore from Safe Mode.
Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup to start
your computer in Safe Mode.

Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that
has administrator credentials.
In Safe Mode type or paste the following command in the Start - Run box then
press Enter.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
