System resore...

Is that because you have no restore points or is it because you are
receiving an error message of some sort?
Have you checked that system restore is actually monitoring the drive you
want to restore? (Go to control panel and click the system icon. in the
system properties click the system restore tab and make sure that the
'status' in the available drive section says 'monitoring'

Sorry, I'm not inclined to help out impatient morons, but I think that
your misspelling is a little more accurate the second time around.

At times, the Restore files become corrupted. You will not be able to
Restore. Turn off and clean out System Restore by moving the available disk
space slider to zero. Reboot and go back to reset it and turn it back on. You
can set a new Restore point.

I cannot restore as when I do it the PC does something and when it finally
restarts there is a note to say System could not be resotred to an earlier
point.

I've had issues with System Restore. It has actually rolled back documents
and downloads as well as Windows. Another "fun" thing about System Restore
is that it will tuck all kinds of files into the System Volume Information
(hidden) folder for later restoration (things like trojan viruses!) and then
keep them locked.

Here's a recommendation (any additions or modifications to this suggestion
welcome):

With your personal files and settings saved to backup media (tapes, CDs or
DVDs) wipe your hard drive and install Windows XP on a separate partition,
large enough to hold the operating system (Windows) with all your favorite
programs. The other partition is used to keep your documents and downloads.

After installing Windows deselect the documents/download drive in respect to
System Restore. This way downloads and documents are not affected.

For maintenance ensure to create restore points before the installation of a
program or a set of programs. Name the restore points carefully. You can now
restore your system to a previous point if a rogue program upsets it.

System Restore does not monitor document files or files in the My
Documents folder.

System Restore uses the System Volume Information folder and it's sub
folders to store the files necessary to perform a restore. This is by
design.

There are viruses that add malicious files to the SVI folder. These
viruses are inert until the system is restored.

Agreed, any files not backed up will be eventually be lost.

IMO this is a good practice, but is not necessary if personal data is
backed up regularly.
Note: Keeping downloaded files in the My Documents folder will keep
them from being monitored by SR.

Again, most data, and all image files are not monitored by System
Restore.

Fully agree.
