Here are the main system tools:

o GNU Parted is the best tool for editing your disk partitions under
linux

o QtParted is a Partition Magic clone for Linux.

o Partimage is a Ghost/Drive-image clone for Linux

o File systems tools (e2fsprogs, reiserfsprogs, xfsprogs, jfsutils,
ntfsprogs, dosfstools): they allow you to format, resize, debug an
existing partition of your hard disk

o Sfdisk allows you to backup and restore your partition table

Exactly how I felt ;)

No offence intended, but Gordon Darling has mentioned this program
multiple times in the last 6 months. :)

None taken, obviously at least 2 of us missed it ;)

This is a front end to GNU Parted, I believe. Nice.
o Partimage is a Ghost/Drive-image clone for Linux

Nice thing about this is it only backs up used sectors. Makes the
image much smaller, at least if your file system isn't full.

Apparently works with NTFS, too. If they add Captive to this, which
uses the MS NTFS driver with a wrapper like WINE to simulate the
Windows calls from Linux, you could have full read-write access to
NTFS partitions. Would make this very useful for Windows techs, too.
o Sfdisk allows you to backup and restore your partition table

Very useful since hosing the partition table can be a show stopper if
you don't have a printout of its last precise construction.

I need stuff like this for my free-lance tech support business I'm
trying to get into. Not to mention rescuing my own system from
screwups.
