system recovery

need help. did a non-destructive system recovery
on an hp pavilion 70 using windows xp.
it went well . I closed the recovery screen and
a new screen opened up.
the message on the screen:
NTLDR IS COMPRESSED
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
when I pressed the keys, the hp blue screen
appeared for a second. But instead of restarting,
I was back at the 'NTLDR is ...' screen.
I tried again - same result
what next? thanks.
