Now THAT's interesting! I just had the same problem with my new XP
installation -- amazing to find out many others have it.
For now, I took it back to the computer store to have them completely
reinstall XP again. But now I'll be on the lookout to see whether the random
rebooting continues, and tell them about your advice if it does.
John
I came to work this morning and it was in a failed boot state. I just
looked at the event viewer and unfortunately there wasn't anything
that indicated as to when it shut down or why. I have also had it a
couple of times today that it has happened. I have opened the case
and there isn't any thing obstructing the fans or vents. I was
worried that it could be a hardware issue.
This aparently happens to thousands of people judging by the number of hits
I
got on Google.
When you get it up and running . . . Try testing your memory with memtest86+
I had your problem happen to me about 5 times with XP (it never happened
with
98se on the same mahcine) some times it corrupted the MBR and sometimes the
registry. MBR is easy to fix without restoing a backup image of the whole
drive.
Registry corruption is a major hassle so keep everything backed up.
When I finaly took my MB manufaturer's advice about testing the memory - it
showed up with errors. Funny thing was that if I tested only one stick of
1Gig
memory at a time, It showd no errors. After I reversed the order they were
installed, the errors went away.
