System process using 98 to 100% CPU

Please Help! computer runs for about half an hour or so, then starts to go
slow and/or jerky. I know then that CPU is maxed out. Culprit: System. Not
system idle...SYSTEM. All other processes show 00 CPU usage. Have used all
the usuals to check for viruses, adware, etc etc. Just had this thing rebuilt
with new Mama board. Windows XP Home SP2. 1GB Ram, athlon 3.some-odd
processor. Use this computer for my recording studio (Logic Audio) and the
internet (AOL and IE explorer). Process Explorer thread showed high number
for USBPORT. Unplugged each USB item, made no difference. couldn't kill
thread in any case. I'm not terribly literate about computer innards, but my
big worry here is losing a paying customer's once in a lifetime performance.

Are you running out of HD space or something? Tried cleaning out the
trash? If you havent already, it wud be a gud idea to delete all the
temporary files, recycle bin files, etc, run chkdsk and then run disk
defragmenter, if this sluggishness is due to a badly fragged drive or
junk, this might help, hopefully.
