system pauses while playing multimedia

I having a hard time finding this issue anywhere...

While I play any sort of media, from mp3s to video files
to CDs, and in any program, my windows xp pro comp
randomly seems to pause and the current media will also
pause while buzzing horribly.

I am trying desperately to find out what the problem is.
There's no regularity to it, and I can't yet track down
what it may be. Any ideas or anyone else experience this?

Purchase and install a good quality video and sound card.
OEM onboard video and sounds chips are very poor for running
multimedia programs.

well here's what i'm working with among other things:

ATI Radeon 7200 vid
SBLive sound
Abit Kd7 RAID mobo
Athlon XP 2600 1.9Ghz cpu
512 Mb ram
