System Pauses When CD Inserted?

My XP Pro SP2 system comes to a grinding halt every time a CD or
DVD is inserted. Whatever's running at the time just stops for
5 seconds or so while the drive spins up and the disc is
recognized.

Both drives are EIDE/ATAPI - the kind that plug directly into
the motherboard on a ribbon cable

I'm guessing this is a consequence of the method of connecting
the drives - but it's still a significant nuisance factor.

"Multiprocessing OS.... bah! humbug!....-)

Is it any better with a FireWire drive - or some other spec that
offloads some of the work of reading the drive?

Pete, if you have the Dvd Drive set to AutoStart then it might be having a
hard time reading the Media. Drive could be getting flaky. My old drive
behaved the same way.

I think you nailed it.

Right-Click Drive Icon | Properties | AutoPlay | Select an action
to perform | Take no action.

Thanks!
