System Keeps rebooting on Start-up

I have a system that runs XP Home version that I am on the verge of
destroying in a VERY spectacular manner.

Currently the start up ritual is:

1)Turn on....monitor comes up....boot process starts. Shortly there-after
MONITOR GOES INTO STAND-BY before mouse or keboard is powered. I then have to
force shut down by holding power button down...then restart.
(Above pocess may or may not occur again.)

2) Monitor now stays up ... but system gives option for normal start etc
after a number of seconds.... the system automatically reboots.

3) The above rebooting occurs at least 3 times until finally Windows starts.

4) SOMETIMES after I select my user name in Windows, a final rebooting takes
place.

I have tried system restore... but this always states unable to restore to
earlier time.

FYI My system was bought in 2001....but remains fully updated from the
Windows website. I also run Norton.

NOTE: ..... Once the system is up and running, if I shut down and restart
... the system boots normally.

I am not sure if it is my imaginantion... but it seems as if this problem
started when I ran the Windows "back-up" utility to back up my system unto an
external harddrive in October.

Microsoft state they will give no support since Windows was loaded by the PC
manufacturer. I have spoken to my PC manufacturer and I have got 3 different
things to do from 3 different persons ( 1)replace video card (2)reformat disc
and reload original XP and search for SP2 update via google!! (3) Reboot from
Safe mode (which does not work)

Need help desperately. If you wait too long to respond I may have "lost it"
prior to a response (i.e. no more system to fix)
