system information will not open + IRQL errors

hello.

i run: XP Pro sp2 bought new a few months ago + all critical updates
abit VIA K8T800 Pro AV8 mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3700+
radeon 850x XT graphics card 256mb
sata 250gb hdd samsung SP2504C
pioneer dvd rewrite drive

I built a computer about 3 months ago, and its been problematic ever
since.... after i fix one problem everything is fine for a while, but an
unrelated problem usually is just round the corner. The lastest one is this:

Recently (for around 2 weeks now) i have been getting bsod errors saying
either IRQL is not equal, or DRIVER_IRQL is not equal.

These seem to come after using windows media player, though they come in
other instances too. After googling for a afew days ive tried a few solutions
(re-installed drives, memory test) and it hasnt helped. infact the same BSOD
came up during some of the driver installations, and i had to do them again.

I tried to uninstall (rollback it called it) media 10 from the add remove
programs, but when i tried to reinstall it again, after it had installed it
it would not open. Clicking the icon just made an hourglass appear for a
second or so, then nothing happened (im pretty sure the no file opened in the
task manager). i finally decided to restore my copmuter to the day before,
and now im back to square one.

Also ive noticed that system information does not open atall (again an
hourglass comes up for a second then nothing happens) so i cant check irq
stuff (though im not a computer expert so it would likely not be much use to
me).

finally today i ran sfc /scannow and it promted me to put the XP cd in, but
not sure if it changed files or not. ive had a crash since then anyhow.

anyideas what could be going wrong and how to fix it?

Thanks,
Guy

Also ive noticed that system information does not open atall

Go here:

Scroll down to or do a Ctrl + F for:
Can't Open Msinfo32

Msinfo32.exe is System Information.
finally today i ran sfc /scannow and it promted me to put the XP cd in,
but not sure if it changed files or not.

If SFC.EXE did anything it will be in the Event Viewer.

Open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK |
Click System | Look at any Windows File Protection
entries

hi. Thanks for reply.

I tried http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_m.htm , and ran the scripts they
suggested, but there has been no change.

As for the event viewer, it says the sfc scan ran sucessfully, and it hasn't
mentioned changing anything.
In the event log there are a number of Errors and Warnings however. most of
the warnings are to do with DNS and internet stuff, which is another problem
ive pretty much narrowed down to a dodgey router in our house, but the errors
are more puzzling.

The following error which i have never seen before came up 6 times in a row,
about 6 hours ago from this reply (after the SFC scan when i think i was
listening to music maybe in winamp)
Type:ERROR
Source: SPTD
Category: none
Event: 4

Driver detected an internal error in its data structures for .

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The other type of ERROR is a System ERROR catergoy (102) event 1003, and
seems to occur 2 or 3times a day, though i dont think it happens at the same
time as a BSOD.

Error code 0000007f, parameter1 00000000, parameter2 00000000, parameter3
00000000, parameter4 00000000.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Not sure if any of this is useful, but if anyone can help please do :D

update:
After finding an old post on a forum with the exact same systeminformation
problem as me and a list of solutions none which worked, i did as the as
other person did and did a repair install of xp, and now system information
works fine. during the repair one error msg came up saying it couldnt find a
file called l3codecp.acm. i went upstarits to my housemates computer to
google it and see if his xp home had it, and found out that it is a media 10
file, so im kinda guessing that that may have been the cause of at least some
problem. anyhow by the time i came down 15 mins laters the errormsg had gone
and xp had fully installed (and i checked the l3codecp.acm file and its where
it should be. now im in the process of updating media 9 to 10 again just to
see if eveything will work from then on.... fingers crossed.
