Simply put, that is how much of the processor's time is NOT being
used. As in, it's idling, like a car engine idles.

The "system idle" process is just a place holder to account for the
time that the CPU is not actually doing anything. It is there so as
allow Task Manager to account for 100% of the available CPU time

How about Spyware? Have you done anything about this?

Go to MVP Jim Eshelman's Spyware Quick Fix page at
http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm and follow the instructions there
to clean and protect your computer from spyware.

Also it pays to occasionally get a "second opinion" regarding possible
virus infestation. Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and do the
free online scan.

If the problem persists post a response back here and we will proceed
further.

Good luck

Break out a dictionary and look up the word "idle," sometime. ;-}
The "System Idle Process" metric is the amount/percentage of time that
your CPU has nothing to do. A reading of 98-99% is generally
considered a good thing, and readings above 90% are normal. Think of
it like a car's engine idling in your driveway before you place the
car in gear.

It is the little loop that the system runs around 'twiddling its thumbs'
when there is absolutely nothing else to do. So with zero program
activity it uses 100% of the CPU (or nearly)
