system idle process

mbartos

I have a new computer, XP Home Edition, 512 RAM. The
computer is frequently bogged down doing something in the
background. Can take 30-45 seconds for small file save.
Frequent short term disk activity (every 3-5 seconds).
Happens even when no applications running. Task Manager
reports "system idle process" occupying 95% CPU usage.
Ideas? Thanks

System idle is supoosed to be that high. It means your cpu is idle, not
doing anything, hanging out, resting, whatever you want to call it, it's
doing nada. Hense the idle word in the name. Like when your car idles it's
doing nothing, the engine is running, but the car is doing nothing. Same
thing. 100% idle would mean the cpu is doing 100% of nothing.

And it's not even a Windows file.

And just how is a responder supposed to know that? It appears nowhere
in this thread.

By the way, punctuation and spelling help.

Who in this thread was talking about cpuidle.exe? No one, not even the op,
mentioned that. If this was/is your problem, you need to state that. We
can't read minds. The thread was about system idle process originally. If
you wanted to change the thread, next time please post exactly what your
talking about.

Also CPUIdle was a third party program intended to cool the CPU by using
a HLT instruction in the idle loop. The XP standard idle loop - the
'System Idle process that this thread is about - is already doing that
and cpuidle should be removed
