System has slowed to a crawl even though I upgraded everything

When I first upgraded my system from 512 kb of RAM to 1.2 gb, and upgraded
my video card, my system was blazing fast. Now it has slowed down to a crawl
again. Why would this be? The only thing different I did was readd my
Logitech webcam software and installed Nero and InCD, which all seem to be
working fine. Oh, and I had been playing with Media Center, had left it in
Media Center overnight, and next day found my system frozen, had to just
power off by holding down the power key.

It is likely media center. It has a lot of issues still, which are being worked
on. The other fact about media center is that after you start it the first time,
it will start up a bunch of media center services and such after subsequent
restarts as it thinks you'll continue to use it. You can disable the services by
going to the start menu and typing "services" in the search box and hitting
enter to open up the services panel. From there, just disable and stop all the
media center services if you aren't going to use it any more. Also, DO NOT
disable anything you don't know what it is, disabling some services will prevent
vista from working. As long as you stick to just the Media center stuff, nothing
will break though. I think that they may have prevented altering the critical
services, but just in case, i would avoid playing with a lot of stuff there
unless you're comfortable playing with service configuration.

I would focus on software then. Trim services and processes and approach
the slow down much the way I would XP. I found when I googled Vista
services and processes that a number were running I didn't need. For
example, several MCE processes ran as a default, but I'm not using MCE.
More Redmond genius--it just gets richer and better every week. I am making
a list of Vista servies and processes but I don't have it done yet.

Defrag, chkdsk regularly, run spyware. If necessary do some clean boot
troubleshooting with msconfig and use the http://support.microsoft.com to
look this up.
