ASUS A7N8X Deluxe ACPI BIOS Rev 1007
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+ Barton
Twin Wintec Industries DDR-SDRAM PC3200 - 512 MBytes =1GB
ATI 9600 XT 128MB DDR

Windows version:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Hello, I trying to find the source of this problem. I was playing
StarWars KOTOR and my system hard restarted. This has happened also
while playing MOHAA (in the past). On occasion, past tense, it hard
rebooted when NOT playing 3D games (only twice I remember).

At first I thought it was my graphic card (ATI 9600XT) but after
taking it out and putting in a FX5600 ULTRA my system did the same
thing while playing 3D games. So then I though it was a power issue so
I bought a ANTEC TRUE POWER 430W PSU but it just repeated the same
problem recently. Now I'm thinking bad memory chips maybe? I don't use
a name brand like Kingston or Crucial, but Twin Wintec Industries
DDR-SDRAM PC3200 - 512 MBytes.

Was my system overclocked? Yes, but not much. I only bumped up the FBS
to 175MHz. Could it be a fault in the ASUS mobo? I would hate to have
to get another MOBO just to see if this is true. Possibly it might be
a software issue or an IRQ issue (which I'm totaly newbie about
IRQs')? Has anyone else had this problem or if you think you know the
source of this problem and have resolved it, please comment. TIA!

What are your temps like? Have you tried running Prime95 in Windows for a
few hours, if you have a hardware problem (particularily memory) it will
report it pretty quickly. One other question, on the first page in your BIOS
do you have it set for Halt on all errors? If so change it to All but
keyboard. Some games while using the keyboard create error codes.

At first I thought it may be because you are overclocking that the PCI bus
was out of spec but I see your mobo has an nFoce2 Ultra400 chip-set. They
lock the PCI bus to 33MHz independantly of FSB so that isn't it. The RAM
should handle the FSB ok, they're rated to 200MHz. Maybe you have them on
too tight timings as you are obviously a tinkerer (like me)?

<Unrelated question> Is your CPU multiplier-unlocked? If it is I would run
it at 200MHz FSB and a lower multiplier. You'll get far better results than
just leaving the multi and raising the FSB a little. My XP 1800+ is running
200 x 10.5 (1.875 vcore) and it rocks. Gotta watch the temps though. Mine
sits on 50-odd°C under full load, standard HSF but with a hole cut in the
case side and a case fan blowing (ducted) directly onto the CPU fan intake.

My cpu is locked so If I want to overclock I have to raise the FBS.

SO far I have had 3 systems doing something very similar, and all of them
tunrned out to be bad ram. I would suggest downloading memetst86 and
running it for a couple of hours. Post the results back

Was it working fine previously?
I had this same problem with the A7N8X non-deluxe. Also, I wasn't able to
update my BIOS.
So, I was told by Asus to clear my RTC memory... basically take the battery
out, short the rtc memory jumper...
then put the battery back in. Amazingly... this solved my problem... my
Quake was crashing...... my fan running a tad slow...
and after I cleared the RTC memory... everything was back to normal...
and..i could update my BIOS.

After flashing your bios, did you reset to defaults, or clear your CMOS? IT
helps a lot of the time.

I just read this in another message which was probably down near P4C800E-
Deluxe. Don't know what it will do. This is not a recommendation.

control panel,
system,
|advanced|,
startup and recovery,
settings,
system failure
try disabling automatically restart
