system hangs

When I right click on the desktop to access the properties, the system hangs
and I have to reboot. I am using XP home edition. Is there a way to repair
the system for this problem?

Does your system totally lock up? do you get a blue screen?
Any errors in the logs?
We need more information to point you in the right direction.

Yes, it stops responding, but there is no blue screen. I am able to use
ctrl-alt-delete to open the task manager and click on restart the system. I
don't know how to check the logs.

Okay,

Next time it happens go into task manager and sort process by cpu usage.
That might give us an indication of what's happening, look for a process
that's using alot of cpu time.
As for the logs, go into control panel, administrative tools, then event
logs. If you don't have administrative tools in your control panel click on
switch to classic view.
