System Hangs on Login

After entering my user password, the screen save comes up,
and the system hangs. No toolbar, Start button or icons.
I have started in safe mode, done a system restore, to no
avail. In Windows Task Manager I can see that
Services.EXE, LSASS.EXE, and SVCHOST.EXE are doing some
I/O. WINLOGON.EXE sporadically writes, also. My guess is
that I am stalled at reading user information. Any
suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
