I am currently running XP pro and recently my system has started to hang just
after it has booted up and displaying the Windows desktop. If I try to do a
soft re-boot it just doesn't want to know. If I switch it off, and re-boot
again it will start, but will then hang almost immediately; this re-booting
and hanging continues until it evntually reaches the desktop, whereupon it
settles down and runs for ever and a day. Checking the error log smotimes
shows that eitherthe hlpctre.exe or iexplore.exe has caused the system to
hang. I have done a repair install via the XP disk and also a full
re-install, but it still hangs, and I have to switch off and re-boot as
described above. It has been back twice to the retailer, who said that he
can't find anything wrong. Any ideas please? Is it a corrupt OS?

Since you've tried formatting and reinstalling Windows, I'm not sure what
else it could be except a hardware problem. Perhaps a problem with your RAM.

My motherboard can either take SDR or DDR ram. The machine was built with
250 SDR, and I then increased it to 512 (2 sticks of 250 each). I then took
out SDR and replaced it with 1024 of DDR. It hangs whether it is SDR or DDR.
have changed video card. It originally had a Nvidia MMX 400, it now has GE
Force 5200. It hangs when either card is installed. It seems strange that
it only hangs from a boot up
