System Hang on Large Hard Drive Accesses

Sometimes when I try to install a program from the hard drive or by CD, or
access and process large amounts of data at once, my system hangs. What could
be the cause of this?
 
Hw much capacity does ur HD have and free space? Also cud you be running
low on RAM?
