system freezes during set up

I am having problems attempting a clean install of XP home.
I was having a problem where my monitor would turn itself off when booting
up.
Ihave tried to re-install xp several times with varying degrees of sucess.
The system kept hanging during the second stage of the installation process.
I have installed a new master hard drive and installed Xp on that. This took
several attempts with system freezing during set up. When I installed Sevice
pack 2 my original problem resumed.
I am now trying to re-install again but the system is freezing during second
stage of set up again. Any ideas what to try next?
 
Disconnect all 'extra' devices, so you have a barebone sys and try again.
If still problems it likely means failing hw, eg vid.card, mobo,memory, and
with your initial problem I might tend towards first two
