I am currently running W-XP/Home. I have received the
following error when booting: "Windows could not start
because the following file is missing or corrupt
\windows\system32\config\system file missing or corrupt;
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows
Setup; Select 'r' to start repair". I have attmepted to
go to a previous state but unable to start this when
booting due to the same problem.
When attmepting to repair from install disk, the option
does not start any windows for restore process, just
leaves me in DOS. If this is correct, unsure what I
should run to attempt repair as instructed. I have
verified that the system file does exist so I am assuming
it is corrupted.
Any suggestions on how I may be able to attempt restore?
I do have a Norton Ghost Image which I could obtain a
previous version of the system file. If unable to restore
as above, is this something I can try or will this cause
other problems?
As a third option, rather than going back to my Ghost
Image which is ~2 months old, would an upgrade to W-XP/Pro
(or can I "upgrade" XP/Home with XP/Home) be a reasonable
course of action or would this cause other problems.
Thanks for any suggestions or advice!
