Occasionally when logging onto a single XP machine with
SP1, I get the message that the system file checker
utility found a bad system file and needs to restore it.
This operation fails. The file in question is version.dll,
which has a version of 5.1.2600.0, which is the same as
all our other machines which do not have this problem. I
am not sure how to make this go away. Any ideas?

Insert the XP CD in the drive and run SFC /Scannow. There may be differences
of this file version (between XP & XP SP1).

Just for info - no, that file was not changed by SP1. Still the
original.

A way of getting a clean copy of such a protected file, without needing
a full scan, is to look for it (in windows\system32) and rename it to a
different extension. File Protection will get a clean copy from the
cache in seconds. Then reboot to bring that version into use - and then
delete the renamed one
