system failure

I run Windows XP Home Edition. Last Friday I ran a VirusScan and the system
showed clean. Saturday (8/13) LiveUpdate had me install 7 Windows Updates
(the 8/9 updates I guess).
Several hours after install/re-boot my system hung-up while working in a Word
doc. Attempts to reboot failed - as Windows attempted to load, it would
stall, turn off & self-restart in a continual loop. My attempts to start in
Safe Mode and Last Known Configuration failed too. There also seems to have
been a progressive degradation - Now when I attempt to restart the system not
only does not even get to the Windows start-up screen but it hangs w/o
shutting down and rebooting.
-I'm wondering if perhaps I had a corrupted registry file that evaded
detection and then the new updates detected and removed - or ......? any
thoughts, help?
Oh- my Windows was OEM loaded so I don't have Windows Start up disk

You appear to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. If the computer
supplier did not provide you with an XP CD or put a recovery partition
on your HDD and provided a method of accessing that partition then
probably your only option would be to go and buy a new copy of XP and
do a repair installation.

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows

Your symptoms sound more like a hardware problem than a Windows
software problem.

I would put a hard disk failure as the #1 suspect.

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site and download their free
diagnostic utility, which will (usually) create a bootable diskette or
CD. Boot your problem computer with that and check out the hard
drive.

Good luck
