System Failing what do I do???

I have an HP MediaCenter 2005 computer running Windows XP. I was told that
one of the Windows updates is conflicting with MediaCenter and causing
problems. I am getting severe hesitation and even lockups I have done
everything the techies on other sites suggested and the problem grows worse.
I no longer care about saving MediaCenter as much as saving my computer. It
isn't a virus or malware please help.

I am running MCE 2005 on one of my computers. It's fully patched and is not
having any problems. Sounds more like a heat problem. Open the case and blow
out all of the dust. Check the heat sink on the CPU and video card. Clean
dust off the fans and the vents to the exterior. Check the power supply as
well. Remove the RAM and clean the dust off the contacts and out of the slots
as well. Did this start suddenly after a particular set of updates, or has it
been developing slowly over time?

Mark's suggestions are well worth following up.

Two further suggestions.

Run a full surface scan with HD Tune to check for bad sectors on the
hard drive.

Try HD Tune. It only gives information and does not fix any
problems.

Download and run it and see what it turns up. You want HD Tune
(freeware) version 2.55 not HD Tune Pro (not Freeware) version 3.00.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Make sure you do a full
surface scan with HD Tune.

Is your system error free?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

having any problems.

What patches did you run?

Sounds more like a heat problem. Open the case and blow
out all of the dust.

There's no dust as I had it in to the shop last month when I had to replace
the light scribe burner drive and he cleaned it up as well.

Check the heat sink on the CPU and video card.

How do I check the heat sink on the CPU and Video card???

Clean dust off the fans and the vents to the exterior.

Done

Check the power supply as well.

Doing this when I post this email.

Remove the RAM and clean the dust off the contacts and out of the slots
as well. Did this start suddenly after a particular set of updates, or has it
been developing slowly over time?

The mouse hesitation and computer freeze up started overnight. At first I
thought it was Malware but my Avira detected nothing Then I thought it might
be an old version of Java causing the issue (had that happen before) but I
uninstalled it and installed a new one.

It really acts like something is running in the background and hogging the
computer and not letting the mouse or other programs run.

I experimented with it today and left the computer on all day but didn't use
it. It did fine when I first got on and didn't start acting up until I got
onto the internet. Once I've been on the internet then it continues acting
up even if the internet is shut off.

Error #2 There was an error stating Windows automatic updates couldn't
establish a connection but I have dial up and wasn't logged on so I figured
that one was self explanatory. But this one isn't to me and it occurred on
the 7th as well.

and I'm having mouse problems.

Which update and who told you that?
The Windows Rollup 2 Update for MediaCenter 2005 and Aaron Stebner at
blogs.msdn.com/astebner had a blog about it and he attempted to help me fix
the problem by doing several things including manually installing various
pieces of the update. When that didn't help he recommended this site.

This suggestion does not correct the problem but it removes the
consequences of the error.

Select Start, Control Panel, Java, Advanced, Miscellaneous and untick
Java Quick Starter. Click OK and reboot.

Tried this but Java won't open to allow me to make any changes.

It is now. I was trying to minimize the number of items that started
automatically at startup but guess I shouldn't mess with stuff when I don't
know what it does.
