System error 53

S

Scott Williams

When I execute "net view" I get in response "system error
53 has occurred" on a non-domained network running three
home computers. The KB says to check the file and print
sharing, but that service is already enabled. My Network
Places shows no other computers, yet when I
run "netdiag.exe" all of my network stuff isset correctly.
What gives? I've even tried to use specified IP addresses
(usually DHCP) and still nothing works right.
Aaaaarrrrrrgggghhhh! I've gone so far as repairing win2k
and having to re-install the svc packs (only to SP2- SP3
had issues with some of my software) and various updates.
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

quoted from http://www.ChicagoTech.net
System error 53 - The network path was not found.
Symptom: when using net view \\ip or \\computername, you get system error
53.

Resolutions: 1) if it is domain environment, check your WINS; 2) if it is
peer-to-peer workgroup, enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP; 3) make sure the machine
is running; 4) make sure file and Printer Share enabled on remote computer;
5) make sure client for ms networks is enabled on local computer; 6) make
sure you type the correct name.

Boyd,

Thank you very much for the reply to my post. I've tried
your suggestions, but not being all that bright, I may not
have executed them correctly. The DSL router uses the
standard 192.168.0.1 IP address, and one of the other
computers on my network is named "lanet." I tried "net use
\\lanet" and "net use \\192.168.0.1\lanet" and both came
back with the system error 53. Using the same command with
the * returned error 67. I tried the nbtstat -R command
and ipconfig/displaydns, but still I get error 53.

I tried the ping command and I was able to ping lanet and
everything worked fine. Dunno if this helps.

Again, thank you for your suggestion.

You need to do net view/net use to the name or IP address of the other
machines (and NOT to the router IP address or the workgroup name)

Ok, I have tried the "net view" and "net use" commands
with the IP address of one of the other machines. I still
get System Error 53. I've tried the nbtstat commands and
ipconfig ones too. Nothing has worked so far. I'm very
frustrated.

Here are the ipconfig/all's from the two win2k machines. I
couldn't figure out how to copy the text from the win98se
machine.

Sorry, and yes, they are all on the same workgroup name
and "lanet" and the win98se machine can connect to shared
folders. But no one can connect to scottsman and scottsman
can't connect to anyone else.

DNS should not be the external DNS-servers. They should point to your
192.168.0.1 which is your DHCP-server.
Is that a W2K-server or a router?

how do I change the DNS server numbers? Aren't they
automatically detected by the computers? Could this mean
my router (answer to your question) is not operating
correctly?

In the DNS-server on your server. On tab Forwarders you check the enable-box
and put in the ISP-DNS-numbers.
In DHCP make sure you've set options 003, 006 and 006 and if clients are set
to obtain IP automatically, DNS should be pushed as well.
