System Crash after base install + service pack 4 install

I have Window ME running on my PC. Occasionally it crashes for unknown
reason. That is why I want to install dual-boot with Window 2000. After the
w2k base install, there are system crash when I try to open window explorer.
I have no internet connection yet. I hope that by installing SP4, the problem
will be gone. No. It still crashes - with no error messages.

I do not think there are viruses as I have run virus scan before the w2k
install.

Can some one give me some clues and ideas what to check for to resolve this
mystery?

Installing another o/s when your pc has a problem is not going to cure
anything. You need to find the cause.
Some things to look at include, memory, drivers, overheating etc

With no detail it is hard to help.
DL is absolutely correct.
ME can crash for a large number of reasons. It is not at all robust.

A machine delivered with ME installed, however, you should know, is
quite possibly a machine whose hardware is simply not good enough for
Win2000 or any NT-class system. Manufacturers can design this way. A
buck saved on a PC component flows directly to the bottom line.

It is a very poor idea, when you have a simple system like ME vomiting
all over the rug, to think that force-feeding it caviar will stop the
vomiting. Kind of like changing chauffeurs from Joe to Bill because the
limousine's steering doesn't work for Joe.

Forget the dual boot idea until you figure out what's wrong with the
system as it is.

Or, at this point in your saga, was. Whatever.

Things to try:

1. From the W2k CD, run the following program exactly as shown, if possible:
winnt32.exe /checkupgradeonly
This MUST be run in a 32-bit environment. Winnt32 is the 32-bit W2k
installer, but with the /checkupgradeonly parameter shown no
installation will occur. The 16-bit (DOS-environment) installer,
winnt.exe, does not have that parameter. The winnt32 installer with that
parameter will simply check the machine for acceptability and driver
availability.

2. Download the hard drive manufacturer's disk diagnostic from their
website and run it. The download will be a diskette image that is
bootable. Running it therefore uses no code but the diagnostic itself,
abd the hard drive and controller circuitry can be thoroughly examined.
You'll get a report. A failing drive or motherboard controller can cause
the symptoms you report.

3. Carry the box to your neighborhood nerd guy's store.

4. I suppose there are other steps (tests, avenues of pursuit, strategic
considerations, tactical options) others may suggest. Right now I've got
to get another beer. Come back with results or complaints, our ear is
always open. :)
