Hi

My computers are slow and I have tons of entries in the System Configuration
Utility . How can I find which ones are needed and which ones I can get rid
of

I did screen captures of them.. There are so many..

I'm worried I might deselect some and not be able to boot up again..

Any advice gratefully received..

Google the names. Don't remove services from the System Configuration
Utility.

You can disable each and every task listed under the startup tab - it won't
affect your ability to boot the machine. There are two things you should be
aware of:
- If you disable your virus scanner and/or firewall then your PC may not be
protected. Physically disconnect the machine from the Internet while these
tasks are unticked. Note that some firewalls slow down machines enormously.
- You may lose some functionality while some startup tasks are disabled,
e.g. wireless networking or Skype. Restore them manually one by one as you
become aware of them.

Techrepublic had a list of the default services and whether or not they can
be disabled.

Offhand, stop Computer Browser unless on a network, kill Bonjour [Apple
updating]. If you are good at computers, kill the Security Center.
