System CMOS checksum bad?

"System CMOS checksum bad - default configuration used" - this is an error message I'm receiving when trying to boot - but it doesn't happen all the time. In addition I'm getting a lot of "operating system not found" messages... this seems to happen spontaneously - Windows will just decide to shut down and restart and then I get this error message. After one of those times getting that operating system message I turned off the computer and when I re-started got the "checksum" error. However, right now I'm accessing this group from the computer I'm having trouble with. Anyone have any idea what's going on? When this first happened, I thought my computer had some sort of problem and used the restore disks. It didn't make any difference, even though my computer is "clean".

You have a hardware problem which should be looked at by someone of
"technician" caliber.

Normally, when you get the checksum error it means that your motherboard
battery needs to be replaced. However, your problems seem to be far
more widespread. My guess is that your motherboard is going. You will
probably want to take the computer to a good local repair shop (not a
BestBuy or CompUSA type of store) and have them check it out for you.

Thanks for your responses. I will probably just break down and take it in somewhere. If the motherboard is going I will NEVER buy an emachines again. Going to also check my warranty when I get home but I think it was only good for one year... figures it would go right after the time is up.. Next computer will be one I build myself

I don't think you should look at it as "breaking down". If your car
needed repair, you'd take it to a specialist, or if you were sick you'd
go to a doctor. We computer repair people need to make a living, too!
And generally, it isn't impossibly expensive. While I think it's great
that you would build your own computer, be aware that there is no
perfect hardware. I had to replace my power supply on this box this
morning!
