The system clock frequently loses time. At a recent
startup it lost 44 minutes. When not in use it often
loses one or two days.

The CMOS battery maybe low of charge, you need to check or replace it.
That battery is located in the motherboard... inside the box.

Losing time while the computer is powered off is almost certainly
your battery. You should replace it,; they cost only a few
dollars. See your hardware manual for instructions.

The clock being wrong on powering up is a sign that the battery on the
motherboard that runs it when the power is off has run flat. Get it
replaced - quickly, before it stops remembering BIOS settings as well
