System can't find hard drive

I have read through many of the questions here but still have not seen the
answer or direction to my problem. I installed a new motherboard / processor
- reinstalled XP Pro clean - then connected the second hard drive. the cable
is correct, the slave master pins are correct - the hard drive was previously
running under XP pro - compmgmt.msc sees the disk, states it is healthy,
uninstalling and reinstalling from hardwre devices has XP seeing the disc -
compmgmt.msc only gives the option to partition- without a drive designation
I can't use most of the other utilities to acces / repair - I have 26 GB of
data on this disk so I can't afford to lose (reformat ) it - any solutions?
(my backup was on the first disk - lost on the clean install (duh!))

Is that why it is installed in this computer? NO and NO - IT WAS MY ORIGINAL AND ONLY DRIVE AGES AGO BUT BECAME TOO SMALL AT 30 gb SO I INSTALLED A NEW 100 gb ALSO AGES AGO AND MADE IT A SECOND STORAGE FOR DATA

CAn yuo provide exactly what is diplayed in compmgmt.msc ? I WILL DO ALL OF THIS TONIGHT BUT THE LISTING FOR THE SECOND DRIVE HAS NO LETTER DESIGNATOR BUT IT DID HAVE THE DRIVE NAME "BIG DRIVE" WAS DARK BLUE, GAVE SIZE 2X.XX gb, SHOWED ACTIVE AND HEALTHY BUT RIGHT CLICKING ONLY GAVE THE OPTION TO DELETE THE PARTITION (C:DRIVE WAS ALSO THE SAME ONLY BIGGER AND HAD ALL OPTIONS ABLE TO BE DONE ON A RIGHT CLICK)
for all drives
HD#, Drive type, size, partion color, green blue black etc
does it give file sytem type? does it indicate online?
What does it show for properties?

it show up in computer bios as "pri slave"? YES ALONG WITH FULL DRIVE PARAMETER INFO I.E. CYLINDERS ETC.
it shows up in device manger with noe errrors? YES AND UNINSTALLING IT AND LETTING PLUG AND PLAY FIND IT TO REINSTALL WORKS WITHOUT A HITCH

have yuo tried to read drive with My Computer?YES
Does drive show up there? NO Does it have drive letter? NO
THANKS FOR THE ASSISTANCE AND ANY MORE THAT YOU MAY HAVE WOULD BE APRECIATED!

This sounds just like the problem I am having:

First of all my computer started having mouse problems, either it
would't work, or was very slow/erratic. I found an article that was
recently posted at microsoft discussing the problem & how to fix.

I followed the article step by step, removing drivers, devices, and
registry values, then reinstalling new drivers. But, it only got worse,
my keyboard stopped functining, no USB ports worked, no mouse (USB or
PS2). Also, both System restore & Norton GoBack would not function.
After a lot of prodding, rebooting, and good luck the keyboard function
returned.

Rather than reinstall Windows, I reformatted my hard drive, then did a
clean intall. That went flawlessly. I then updated Windows XP Home
Edition.

The problem: Prior to reformatting I moved all my important data, and
files into the 2nd hard drive (slave), thinking I could just recopy
them back onto the main drive. Windows explorer doesn't show the 2nd
HD. It shows up in device manager, and in my BIOS.

I am going to try it this evening
