from safe mode...
you can try a system restore...
go to the most recent date where you machine was working properly...

if that does not work...
you can also boot from your XP cd and try a repair installation

(just google for the exact instructions)

Check Event Viewer for error details.
Okay I checked. many different
service control manager
errors

I still do not know how to recover. I hate to have to reinstall everything.

Doesn't help. When you view the logged events in Event Viewer (double-click
them in the right-hand pane) in the upper right corner, third button down is
a copy to clipboard, then you can paste in the body of a reply message.

Please do so for each of the different System Log events (that are a Type:
'Error' or 'Warning') since last boot so we can see all of the event detail.

Also check Device Manager for error codes and or non-starting devices.

Accuracy in the details is the key to your solution. It's not possible to
perform an in-place upgrade with service pack integrated installation media.
