System Beep and Email Notification Sounds Disappeared

I somehow turned off the annoying system beep that had somehow replaced my
normal sound for email notification by clicking on some FAQ website through a
posting on this site. Now the system beep is gone, but my normal sound won't
play, even when I go into the control panel and change it, and go to the
tools menu in Outlook and make sure "play sound" option is checked under
email options. what can I do?

Go into the Control Panel and click on Sounds and Audo....

Click on the Sounds tab at the top. Ensure the Sound Scheme is set to
Windows Default and then you can change anything you want and create your
own individual scheme.

On the line New Mail Notification... what sound do you have set at the
bottom. The default is Windows XP Notify.

And in that window when you click on the Play icon (to the left of the Sound
windows at the bottom) do you hear the sound play?

Yes, when I test it using that Play icon, it does work.
The system beep starting replacing my regular sound when I plugged my
computer in for the first time using an ethernet connection (I'm usually
wireless), and had to enable the local area connection. Then, when I went
back to my regular wireless set-up, the system beep remained, so I tried the
steps I described in my first posting. I disabled the system beep, but the
normal sound just doesn't play.

Thank you so very much for your help.

I changed the email notify tone for another and it worked fine for ages then
suddenly disappeared and I can't get any sound to play now, other than the
initial 'pop' noise. Did you ever get a solution Megan?

Hi - no, I haven't yet. I just reposted the problem but haven't gotten a
response yet. I guess keep checking back here, or if you post your problem,
then we can check each others. Hopefully that will work.

Megan, I know this is a crazy thing to have overlooked after I've tried all
kinds of things to get the sound back but I've now fixed it. The tickbox on
Outlook's Tools/Options/General Tab "Play sound when new message arrives" had
somehow got itself un-ticked!! Possibly worth a look? Good luck, Steve

Megan R,

I had the same problem! Here is what fixed my machine.

Click on the start button. Go to Run Type in regedit

Once registry editor has opened up left click on the Hkey_Current_User key.
In the right hand area you will find a binary string value that says
Name: (default)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: VALUE NOT SET

Now if your data does NOT say value not set simply right click on the
default string and delete. Windows will immedately create you a new
one. Restart your computer and you should hear sounds.

Somebody at my work found this fix on www.ask.com. Here is the actual site
that has the answer. http://www.pcbanter.net/archive/index.php/t-14985.html

I hope this works for you!
