System 32/drivers

My Toshiba laptop will not open Windows due to a missing
file System32/drivers/pci.sys. When I try my XP Pro
upgrade it does not recognize the disk. I do not the XP
Home cd because my vendor (CompUsa) said I wouldn't need
it.

I'd like to save my files before doing a restore. Any
suggestions?

My Toshiba, also bought from CompUSA, had an XP Restore Desk. While they
may have erroneously told you that you don't need the CD, surely Toshiba
packaged one with the machine.

During the early part of boot up, press F8 key to bring up a windows
startup menu (I forget what it's called). From there, select a system
restore to bring the system back to checkpoint on a prior date on which
it did work ok. That should enable you to boot up.

Meantime, figure out what happened to this file (virus?), and contact
CompUSA and have them prove to you that Toshiba didn't supply a CD with
the original packaging.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

When did this happen? did you do an upgrade for any
drivers withinthe last few days? I had that problem when
i did a windows update... you must find the device
example": video card with unstable drivers and put into a
tempory video card to allow the disk to even been seen to
restore from the disk.... good luck friend. Morgan

.
Thanks for your help. I tried F8 but couldn't boot safe
mode or earlier checkpoint. Thanks.
