Sysprep & XP & SID

If I run sysprep on a machine that's currently added to a
domain will the SID be removed/regenerated when the
machine compeletes the sysprep process?
I know that sysprep will remove the machine from the
domain, so I am guessing that it also takes care of the
SID.
Are there any MS tech articles that explain/state this?
Thank you,

It's been my experience that you can't Sysprep a computer that's in a
domain. You'll have to disjoin the computer from the domain before you can
Sysprep it.
As such, Sysprep doesn't have any mechanism for changing existing computer
accounts in a domain. If you tell it to, Sysprep can join a computer to a
domain during mini-setup, and the new system SID will be used.

Mike:

Sysprep will regenerate a SID for the computer.
There is no limitation to sysprepping a machine that is a member of a domain.
Microsoft best-practice just involves removing the PC from the domain.
Sysprep includes the "nosidgen" option, were you to prefer maintaining the
computer's original SID.
On your Windows XP CD, the Support folder, extract files from Deploy.cab.
Read the included Help files. You will get more than enough information.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply's.

Sysprep does work with a machine on a domain, and as far
as the PC is concerned it is removed from the domain.
However, since sysprep doesn't have the permissions to
actually "remove" the machine from the domain, the machine
is still listed.
This would cause a problem if I was wanting to reuse the
same computer name. With that said I don't know if the
SID is an issue, as the sysprep process will reassign a
new/different SID.
Does this sound correct?

Stephan:

Re-using the same computer name will not be a problem.

Test it, and you will see.

Good luck.
